All but one!

Image
"One of my friend told that one of his neighbour had a problem with one of his car and that's just one of his problem!" ssss.. something missing? yep, when you use "one of", you're trying to refer to one particular thing from a collection, which is supposed to more than one, right? So, lets rephrase it and see.. "One of my friends told that one of his neighbours had a problem with one of his cars and that's just one of his problems!" sounds right? Alright! now try.. "one of my wife's relatives.. " 🤜👊🤛 see ya next week 😂😂😂 Previous Topic:  A pair too many Next Topic:  Canning the ability All Posts:  Prof Mohanram's Voice

A pair too many

Image
“Wanna join me for shopping?” “What are you gonna buy?” “I’m starting office tomorrow and need a new shoe” “Just one shoe? what will you do for the other leg?” “C’mon.. you know what I mean, I’ll buy a pair” “There you go, no one buys a shoe, but a 'pair of shoes'” “Alright, I agree, btw, I also need a new specs.. or wait should it be like.. I also gotta get a new pair of specs?” “Absolutely, you're getting it! let’s get ready” “Wait.. I’m wearing my new jean; need the scissor to remove the tag, have you seen it?” “Well well well, it’s not 'jean', that’s again ‘a pair of jeans’ and for that matter, even ‘trousers’ or ‘pants’ they  never come single! And don’t forget the scissors , they are a pair too.. here, they are!” :) Previous Topic:  Stuck with Struck Next Topic:  All but one All Posts:  Prof Mohanram's Voice

“Stuck” with “Struck”

Image
As the clock struck 9, it was time for our most punctual colleague to walk in. what came instead was a phone call from him, “Buddy, I’m struck in the lift, can you please call the mechanic?” “Struck? Shouldn’t we call the police, but why would someone strike such a nice gentleman?”  Honestly, i had to overcome the urge to point out, in favour of the situation and kept this to my mind and said,  “Alright, let me call the mechanic and tell him that you’re stuck in the lift” Another colleague who usually arrives late calls and says, “Dude, i’m struck in traffic and will be late” Knowing him very well, I just said “Alright, just stick with the jam” As I start to wonder how often people use “struck” instead of stuck, guess what struck me next! Another colleague calls and says, “Hey, please go ahead with the meeting as i’m still struck in another one” What a day to get stuck with! :) — Note: for the curious ones..  Stuck - past tense of stick, like ge...

Carriers and Careers

Image
We were having our school friends get-together and our doctor friend who has been working overtime in the covid ward could not mingle well said, "Sorry guys, this carrier is hectic, can't focus on other things" I asked  "You mean the carrier of the disease?" He said, "No, my own carrier" Knowing my friend, it's then I realised he meant career and not any carrier.. We turned to our teacher friend who's always happy to help and he explained "It's all about pronunciation buddies,  Carrier (pronounced 'carry-er') is something/someone used for carrying something, like a luggage carrier or goods carrier, may be even an infection carrier..  whereas, a career (pronounced 'ka-ri-yer') is about your profession and I hope that's what you meant" Just when another friend pointed,  "As a covid doctor, his career is all about carriers, isn't it?" 😀 Previous Topic:  Too loose to lose Next Topic:  Stuck with St...
