Whether it is a question?

Image
Once upon a time, in a crowded lunchroom our lonely and angry, err.. hungry young man had just secured a table with 2 chairs all for himself. He unpacked his lunchbox and was about to take the first bite, when he heard a beautiful voice.. “If you are not using this chair…” With the yummy food inch away from the drool, still holding onto his decency not to eat while talking, he was waiting to hear the rest of the sentence.. And he’s still waiting, while both the food and his drool about to slip from their respective places. “Oh dear, why don’t u finish the sentence”  said his mind, not his mouth which was already starving. However, again the voice repeated.. “Whether you are using this chair… “   “Oh god, please” said in his mind again and waited.. “Excuse me.. are you using this chair?" “Thank god, finally you asked” “Well, I asked 3 times” “Really? I thought you were about to finish the sentence” “It was a question!” “No, it was a clause” “If it was?” “And this one too.. and ...

And, so you think!

Nate:  “I think so they are coming!” Pete: “Really? Will they come if you think?” Nate:  “No, No, I just think so they are coming” Pete: “Again, you are confusing. Can you be specific” Nate:  “I think so I’m specific” Kate: “Oh Come on, just tell whether they are coming or not” Nate:  “I think so” Pete: “Got it, Stop right there” Nate: “Wasn’t I clear before?” Kate: “Well, when you say ‘I think so they are coming’, you mean, they are coming because you think!’” Nate: “Ah ok, that could be a possibility, right?” Pete: “No way” Nate: “Is it?” Kate: “Yeah, I believe so!” Kyle: “Can someone explain what’s going on here?” Kate: “When someone says  ‘I think so’   that means they agree with the prior statement. However, when someone wants to say that they either think or hope about something, they should not use  ‘so’ , but just say  ‘They think’  or  ‘They hope’ , however, when they say  ‘They think so’   or ...

To Confirm or to Conform?

Image
Ravi: Hello Madam, Can you conform the project details according to the guidelines sent by MD today? Kavi: Yes sir, but tell me whether you want me to confirm or conform? Ravi: Would you tell me the difference between them madam? Kavi: Well, Conform means stick to the rules or guidelines like following the rules, not making any deviations, etc Ravi: And Confirm is? Kavi: Confirm means to substantiate or reiterate an information or a fact, like in.. Ravi: like in, clearing a confusion by bringing out the correct information? Kavi: Yup, there you go. Now tell me, what do you want me to do? Confirm or Conform? Ravi: Well, actually, I’d prefer that all the guidelines are conformed and I need you to confirm the same :) Kavi: Ah ha, definitely sir! *** Ex.  Election commission has confirmed that the election protocols were conformed in the recent elections  ############ Previous Post:  Which Way? Which way? In or on?

Nathan: Hey Siva, haven’t heard about that surprise thingy in a while, any updates? Sivan: Sure, good things in the way! Nathan: Oh, is something blocking? Sivan: No, no. all well, why? Nathan: Well, I was just worried if something is in the way. Sivan: Is it to be worried if something is in the way? Nathan: Okay, I get it. you meant “something’s on the way!” Sivan: That’s right, but what’s the difference? Nathan: When something is on the way, it means something is progressing, which is mostly a good thing. However, if something is in the way, that means, something is blocking the progress, hence not a good thing. Sivan: Ah ok! Clear, you’re right, things are on the way. Nathan: Good to know, I’m relieved now. Sivan: Well, in a way, some things are in the way too, but sure enough, there should be a way out. Nathan: You bet! Where there is a will, there’s a way! ---------------------------------------------------------------- Previous Post:  Double Double! All...

Double Double!

Leena: Hey Meena, how was your trip to the new aquarium? Meena: Good good! I saw colour colour fish in big big tanks. They had small small fish in different different containers. First first I saw long long shark tanks.  Leena: Hmm Hmm Meena: While coming back, we went to the cafe where they were making hot hot vadas and to avoid missing the bus, we had to go running running Leena: So, you did everything double double? Meena: double double? No no? Leena: Ha ha, when you think in one language and translate into English, you end up making such  funny phrases or in your style “funny funny” phrases Meena: What what? Leena: See.. in many Indian languages, we use double words to emphasise certain things, such as Very first time- first first Multi colour - colour colour Very big - big big Very small - small small Many different - different different etc While it is perfectly fine in their native language, it doesn’t carry the same meaning, but rather sou...

Every Single.. or Plural?

Gita: Everyone is ready since morning, They are all waiting just for you. Rita: I’m not leaving until you clarify this Gita: Clarify what? Rita: You first said “Everyone is”. Then you say “They are" Gita: Right, what’s the problem? Rita: How can the same people be both singular and plural at the same time? Gita: Ah ha..  When I said “Everyone is”, it denotes each one of them and hence singular. You cannot say "Everyone are" However, when referring collectively using "they" it becomes plural and hence “They are”  Rita: What about everybody then? I’m sure I can make them plural Gita: Everybody is also similar to Everyone Rita: Everybody and everyone are same, heyy.. I won :) Gita: Not yet, Now everybody is as angry over you just as everyone and they’ll all come and catch you if you don’t start right away Previous Post:  Too good or Very good? Too Good or Very Good?

Image
Gita: How was the movie? Sita: Too Good! Gita: Too Good? Sita: Yeah, too good! Have never seen something like this recently Gita: Ok, I’m trying to understand if that is good or not. Tell me will you watch it again or not? Sita: Definitely! Gita: Alright, Now I assume it is actually very good Sita: Too good is not very good? Gita: Well, “too good” is actually a tricky phrase than a simple adjective. Something can be good or very good or even extremely good, but too good means something beyond the limits or simply non existent Sita: Oh, like in “too good to be true” Gita: exactly, for example, the news that says all employees will get 100% salary hike is..  Sita: ..too good to be true Gita: Very good :)
