To say or to tell

Image
Little Dolly was singing rhymes "Johnny Johnny yes papa.. Saying lies no papa..” Daddy: Are you sure Johnny is "saying" lies? Dolly: Ma'am said he said lies Daddy: he "said" or he "told" Dolly: No, "She" said Daddy: Nah, that doesn't sound right. It should be "Telling lies" and not "Saying lies" Dolly: Isn't "saying" same as "telling"? Daddy: There's a slight difference though. For now, just imagine Say + to = Tell When you say something in particular or to someone particular, it is telling, whereas something general is saying Ex. Look at the usage of say and tell within the same context in this conversation A) He says he is not coming B) But he told me that he'd come A) Yes, he just told that he cannot make it today B) I keep telling him not to miss it A) Yeah, every time he says a new reason 😎 Dolly: Alright, so you mean to say "Saying lie...

A few and A little!

Mohan: Hey Rohan, How was the gathering? Rohan: It was good. Few people turned up! Mohan: That means no one came? Rohan: No, not much, but a sizeable crowd Mohan: Ok, that means a few people did come :) Rohan: What’s the difference? Mohan: Let’s say you invited 100 people and expected about 50 to come.  When you say few people came, that means the number is far below expectation which goes in a negative manner On the other hand, you invited 100 people and expected not more than 10, but about 20 came, which is a positive sign. In that case, you say “A few people came” Rohan: Oh, so “few” alone means close to nothing and “a few” means it’s actually something :) Glad, I learnt little! Mohan: Again, when you say just “little” it means almost nothing Rohan: Ah ok, got the logic, it should be “A little” Mohan: There you go! Remember: Few - Close to Empty like for example: “It is very critical, Only few options left” [Negative] A Few - Something satisfactor...

Of Statements and Questions!

Daman: “Hey Vikas, What you are doing” Vikas: “..” Daman: “What you are doing man” Vikas: “..” Daman: “Tell man, what you are doing” Vikas: “This is the correct statement :)” Daman: “What?” Vikas: “When you first said that, you didn’t ask a question” Daman: “Alright, what is the difference?” Vikas: “A right question should have the verb before the noun ” If you put the verb before the noun , it becomes a statement Now, you add What to it, it becomes a clause which needs another statement to complete it :)” Ex. “What are you doing?” ==> Question “What you are doing” ==> Incomplete statement “What you are doing, is great” ==> A complete statement Daman: “That’s good. There should be more such things, right? What it is ” Vikas: “You know it, now correct it” Daman: “All right, What is it? ” Vikas: :) Previous Topic: Have and Having All Posts:  Prof Mohanram's Voice
