Double Double!

Leena: Hey Meena, how was your trip to the new aquarium?

Meena: Good good! I saw colour colour fish in big big tanks. They had small small fish in different different containers. First first I saw long long shark tanks.

Leena: Hmm Hmm

Meena: While coming back, we went to the cafe where they were making hot hot vadas and to avoid missing the bus, we had to go running running

Leena: So, you did everything double double?

Meena: double double? No no?

Leena: Ha ha, when you think in one language and translate into English, you end up making such  funny phrases or in your style “funny funny” phrases

Meena: What what?

Leena: See.. in many Indian languages, we use double words to emphasise certain things, such as

Very first time- first first

Multi colour - colour colour

Very big - big big

Very small - small small

Many different - different different

etc

While it is perfectly fine in their native language, it doesn’t carry the same meaning, but rather sounds funny.

Meena: Hmm… got it got it

Leena: oh my god god!
